Cyrus had at least three convicts amongst his forebears, in his direct line of descent and several others associated with his extended family. They arrived as early as 1791, in the Third Fleet, which in Australian eyes makes them the equivalent of "royalty". Cyrus never referred to the convict history of his family, and during his lifetime it would have been something to be ashamed of, rather than proud as is now the case. Time and distance have had the usual effect of softening attitudes, and developing sympathy for the hardy souls who survived the hardships of imprisonment in England and Ireland in the 18th century, the rigours of a long ocean voyage in squalid conditions, and then privations and insecurity in the new colony.
